The Star Ledger
We note without much sadness the passing the other day of J.B. Stoner, the unregenerate segregationist known for his hateful speech and violent prejudices. He died, childless, in a nursing home in his native Georgia.
It may be a comfort to some that Stoner's spirit lives on in the studios of radio station New Jersey 101.5, where the self-appointed "Jersey Guys" -- loudmouths Craig Carton and Ray Rossi -- have once again polluted the airwaves with their peculiar brand of mean-spirited ethnic "humor."
This time their target was Asian-Americans, whom they demeaned as yet another "fringe group" courted by politicians in a mayoral race in Edison, where one candidate is Korean-American.
Just the "Jersey Guys" having fun, according to station manager Andrew Santoro.
Oh?
Here are excerpts from Monday's show:
Carton: And here's the bottom line ... no specific minority group or foreign group should ever ever dictate the outcome of an American election. I don't care if the Chinese population in Edison has quadrupled in the last year. Chinese should never dictate the outcome of an election. Americans should.
Rossi: Americans should, exactly.
Carton: And it's offensive to me ... not that I have anything against Asians ... I really don't ... I don't like the fact that they crowd the ... blackjack tables in Atlantic City with their little chain smoking and little pocket protectors.
And this later exchange between Carton and a listener:
Caller: The last couple of callers, I guess they don't know that they live in America and we're being overrun. I had just moved out of Edison because of what has happened in the past 10 years ... Orientals are all along the whole complete Route 27. And Indians have taken over Edison in north and all over.
Carton: Damn Orientals and Indians.
Do we really think those kinds of moronic, nasty exchanges are just "having fun with the topic," as station manager Santoro contended? If so, let's have a few more yuks about how women suffering from postpartum depression "must be crazy in the first place," an assessment Carton offered after Mary Jo Codey, wife of the acting governor, discussed her post-birth mental state.
Asian groups are hugely unsatisfied with the station's condescending response, and with good reason. But their displeasure is unlikely to make much difference to Santoro, Carton or Rossi, not while listeners continue to dial in.
As long as sponsors continue to give the station money and as long as politicians court its favor -- Carton and Rossi are hosting a May 12 debate among the Republican candidates for governor unless they have the good sense not to show up -- then the "Jersey Guys" will go on spouting offensive trash.
Email the station and let them know what you think:

adopting a toddler <by L. White 4/5/2005> (3 replys)
|
 |
My husband and I are preparing to adopt our second daughter from China. However, this time around (due to our ages) we'll be bringing home a toddler, age 12-18 months. Could anyone tell us what delays to expect and what other problems/concerns we will encounter with this age group? I would like to hear from parents that have adopted within this age group.
Thanks
