Being a parent is a challenging and all-encompassing commitment. Add adoption to the mix and things get a bit more complex. Find out how others have handled “sticky” situations, found support in their communities, “walked the walk,” and “talked the talk.” At the get-together, adults and children have the opportunity to learn, laugh, and socialize without worrying someone will say something insensitive about adoption or your family.
Fun for all ages. Light lunch served.
The program is FREE, OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY, and brought to you by the Ametz Adoption Program, the Windsor Terrace Y, and a UJA-Federation grant.

Dr. Palmer's book "The Dance of Identities" (University of Hawai'i Press, 2010) delves into identity explorations and reflections through the lens of Korean adult adoptees by portraying the participants from their own perspectives as they reflect upon their journeys to discovering their multiple identities. The manuscript specifically investigates how the participants dispute, contemplate, resist, and defy the notion that there is an authentic Korean, authen tic White, and authentic Korean adoptee identity. The Korean adoptee participants provide valuable insight into racial identity development, race relations, and social justice activism by reflecting upon their lives of growing up cultural white, yet constantly being identified as Asian.

Families with Children from China of Greater New York presents:
“Life After High School: Transitioning to College and Careers”
A Three-part Support Group for Adopted Teens with Learning Differences
DATES/TIME: the third Sunday of the month - December 18, January 15 and February 12th - from 5-7pm.
COST: $60 total ($20 per 2 hour session)
LOCATION: Kacy's office on the Upper West Side.
255 West 101st between Broadway & West End
REGISTER online at www.fccny.org
SUMMARY
Making the transition to college and beyond is difficult for all teens but when you add adoption, racial identity and learning differences into the mix, it can be even more challenging. FCC Teens with learning differences who are currently attending high school are invited to join us once a month in Sept-Oct-Nov on Sunday evenings from 5-7pm. The focus will be on fun-filled sharing activities rather than a classroom type setting. The purpose of this group is to help empower our children who are living with learning differences so that they will have the confidence and skills needed for success in the adult world. Emphasis will be on building friendships through sharing experiences. If there is enough interest, we can continue this group in the new year.
Specific topics will vary depending on the interests and needs of the participants but may include any of the following:
What do I want to do post-high school?
Strategies for Success: How to get the help you need. This is the most important life skill a person can have.
Self-Assessment: How to identify strengths and weaknesses in learning and choosing a realistic and suitable career path.
Disclosure: When and how should you tell professors and peers about your LDs
Am I ready for college? A job?
Fears and anxieties about the college application process & testing.
Non-college options – Gap Year programs
Themes in adoption that come up for teens during this time.
Light snacks or pizza will be served.
The group will be facilitated by Kacy Ames-Heron, LCSW who is a psychotherapist as well as an adoptee from Korea. Kacy Ames-Heron, LCSW is a psychotherapist in NYC where she works with individuals, couples and families touched by adoption. She received her Social Work degree from Columbia University and has done post-graduate work in family/couples therapy and adoption therapy from Ackerman Institute for the Family and Hunter College School of Social Work respectively. She has been an active member in Also Known As and worked at Holt in Oregon in planning for the First Gathering of Adult Korean Adoptees in 1999. She has traveled with the Ties Program to Korea as a group facilitator and bus leader for children adopted from Korea and their families. Kacy worked for several years at the Astor Child Guidance Center where she focused on working with children and teens with learning differences and complex trauma. Kacy has presented workshops throughout the United States and Canada on Traveling Back to Birth Country, Meeting Birth Family, and Themes around Love and Attachment in Couples Where One of the Partners is Adopted. Kacy herself was adopted from Korea. She currently resides in NYC with her husband, daughter and two dogs.

Introduction
The documentary Adopted. The Movie (2009) by filmmaker Barb Lee "reveals the grit rather than the glamour of transracial adoption. Lee goes deep into the intimate lives of two well-meaning families and shows us the subtle challenges they face. One family is just beginning the process of adopting a baby from China and is filled with hope and possibility. The other family's adopted Korean daughter is now 32 years old. Prompted by her adoptive mother's terminal illness, she tries to create the bond they never had. The results are riveting, unpredictable and telling. While the two families are at opposite ends of the journey, their stories converge to show us that love isn't always enough." Because of the thought provoking nature of this challenging film it made a splash in the adoption community and beyond. The Movie was followed by an educational companion DVD We Can do Better in which five themes are discussed: Intentions behind Adopting, Parenting the Adopted Child, the MultiRacial Family, Identity for the Transracial Adoptee and Tough Questions. See the website: http://www.adoptedthemovie.com/
In six evenings we will show the film and the five sections of the companion DVD. Each evening is introduced by adult adoptee experts, who will also facilitate the discussion afterward. The series is curated by Dr. Amanda Baden, an expert on transracial adoption and Associate Professor at Montclair State University, Montclair NJ: http://www.transracialadoption.net/About/About.html
For whom
ADOPTED is appropriate for teens and older. There are issues related to families, adoption and ethnicity that might be challenging for some. This film will likely lead to some important and powerful discussions within families, so parents should expect to talk about it afterward. The series is meant for adopted persons, prospective adoptive parents; for adoptive parents, who want to revisit themes of race and identity in their families; for social workers at adoption agencies and in government, interested in the adult adoptee's perspective; for policy makers in local and national administrations and foundations; for students in education and social work; for all of us who have experiences with adoption.
