Since its debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe more than a decade ago, The Complete Works… has become one of the world’s most popular shows. performed by the Reduced Shakespeare Company, Sonoma, CA.
The FCC organizer, Marybeth Seitz, would like to gather at the Jefferson Market Library (6th Avenue btn 9th & 10th) well before the event to learn a bit more about Shakespeare and become better acquainted with one another. Seventh Annual Adoption Conference
2010 Adoption Policy Conference
Permanency for Children
Presented by: The Center for Adoption Policy,
The Child Advocacy Program of Harvard Law School,
The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute,
The Justice Action Center at New York Law School, and
The New York Law School Law Review
Friday, March 5, 2010
New York Law School
Auditorium and Events Center
Now in its seventh year, our annual conference explores topics at the forefront of adoption policy in the United States and internationally. This year's conference entitled, "Permanency for Children,” will focus on the national and international policies promoting the preservation and reunification of families, as well as the creation of permanent families for parentless children.
Expert panels will discuss the major issues relating to the status of the world's 143 million unparented children. How can we answer the need for permanency in their lives? Topics such as domestic and international adoption, long-term care in foreign countries, and aiding biological families on both a national and multilateral level will be addressed, as well as legal and immigration questions related to permanency issues.
This year’s conference will take the form of a symposium, with several of the academic contributions to be collected in a subsequent edition of the New York Law School Law Review. Registration is free unless you want CLE credit and then the cost is $99. Please go to www.nyls.edu/adoption2010 to register.

Did you know nearly every adopted child is asked questions about their adoption? For children in trans- racial families, it can begin as early as age 3: ”Why don't you look like your mom?” For others, it might not begin until they're 6, 7 or even 8: “Why were you adopted?” or “Where's your real mother?” Teen years are filled with identity challenges. Questions and comments from peers and others continue throughout the lifetime.
Empower your child with W.I.S.E. Up! the nationally recognized tool developed by the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.). This workshop is designed to help adopted children learn tools and strategies for handling awkward moments in public situations, adoption related teasing, inappropriate comments and questions, and to decide the most comfortable way to communicate about their adoption story with others.
Workshop goals are:
*To teach children and parents specific tools and strategies to deal with difficult adoption related situations.
*By learning these tools, children will feel empowered to deal with social situations and a greater sense of self esteem.
*For parents to learn how to help their children talk with them about these issues.
*To provide a common language and set of tools for families to improve communication and effectiveness in dealing with difficult social situations.
The W.I.S.E. Up! Workshop is for pre-adoptive and adoptive parents, as well as adopted children ages 6-11. Parents will meet with one IAC Center therapist while children meet with a second IAC Center Counselor and then the 2 groups will meet together.
FCCNY as an organization offers the WISE Up Workshop at the request of our members as one of many offerings, has no financial interest in WISE Up, and does not take a position with respect to or bear any responsibility for their scope, content or impact. If you need more detailed information about content to help you decide whether WISE Up Workshop is appropriate for your child, please contact Joni Mantell, Infertility and Adoption Counseling Center Director at JMantellMSW@iaccenter.com or 609-737-8750

The Asian American population is growing at a faster pace than other
large racial and ethnic groups in the United States. Its growth is
expected to triple between now and 2050 when Asian Americans will
constitute 8% of the U.S. population. The community also has unique
healthcare needs.
Asian Americans experience an equally high, if not higher rate of mental
illness than the general population, but are one-fourth as likely to
seek help. Mental health brings with it stigmas and hidden communities
within communities.
This panel will discuss the work of some of the research essays included
in the groundbreaking new book released by NYU's Center for the Study of
Asian American Health, Asian American Communities and Health, which
includes research on mental health in the Asian American population with
the elderly and LGBT Asian American communities.
The panel will open
with a preview clip from the documentary film, "Can," a work-in-progress
by Pearl J. Park, which follows Can Truong, a war refugee who was among
the millions of boat people who fled Vietnam in the 1970's, was a model
student, and aspiring to become a doctor when he was diagnosed with
depression and bipolar disorder.
Panelists:
Irene Chung, PhD, Associate Professor and Chair, Casework Curriculum,

Travel Symposium Featuring
Preview Screening of Daughter’s Return
A Film about One Girl’s Search for Her Birth Parents in China
Saturday March 13, 2010 1PM - 4PM
Deloitte Services LP
Two World Financial Center
New York, NY 10281
$10 per person:
REGISTER online at www.fccny.org This event is recommended for parents/adults only. The film content and discussion may be sensitive and is meant for an adult audience. We hope to offer a future event for teens after the film is released in Fall 2010.
Daughter’s Return (film screening and panel discussion)
Families with adopted children from China face a special challenge – we must explain why, most likely, our children will never know about or be able to connect with their birth parents. But that presumption may be changing, opening a wealth of new possibilities, questions and concerns for our adoptive families.
Dr. Changfu Chang, known as “the professor of adoption films,” has just completed a new film about one girl’s search for her birth parents. Daughter’s Return documents the gripping journey of 14-year Sofia who travels to China to find her birth parents, discover her heritage and deal with complex feelings of love and abandonment. Involving media teams from China and the United States, Dr. Chang captures Sofia’s odyssey from the same spot where she was found 14 years ago through her moving journey to understand her past.
Daughter’s Return is scheduled to be finished in the fall, but Dr. Chang has kindly produced a 30-minute version for screening at FCCNY’s travel symposium. Dr. Chang will also talk about his experience making the film, and participate in a panel discussion afterwards.
From Home to Homeland (panel discussion)
From Home to Homeland: What Adoptive Families Need to Know Before Making a Return Trip to China is a new compilation of articles by adoptive parents, adult adoptees and professionals in the adoption field. Co-editors Debra Jacobs and Iris Chin Ponte will offer technical tips and guidance on facing the fears, hopes and expectations often involved in making a heritage trip to China.
Travel Organizations
Representatives from a wide variety of travel organizations will be on hand to share information and answer your questions. Participating organizations to date: Always and Forever Adoption Homeland Tours, Chinese Cultural Exchange & Homeland Tours, Chinese Motherland Tours, Lotus Travel, Our Chinese Daughters Foundation.

The Three Riddles of Turandot, by celebrated Chinese-American choreographer Nai-Ni Chen, is a neoclassical ballet that breathes life into the ancient Chinese legend about icy Princess Turandot who holds all suitors at bay by decreeing that she will only marry a man who can solve three riddles. Set to Puccini’s famous score this Turandot features dramatic dance and pantomime. The Star-Ledger called it “a ballet of compelling mystery and emotional depth…a sumptuously theatrical production.”
