2013 Conference: Possibilities!
NYSCCC 24th Annual Foster Care and Adoption Conference
May 10-11, 2013 • Albany Marriott Hotel
Child welfare is a challenging field, but one where the possibility of progress inspires us all – whether on the implementation of statewide policy to improve families’ lives or on the individual level where a child getting herself independently dressed for school can fill a parent with joy. NYSCCC’s 24th annual conference, Possibilities!, will offer participants an opportunity to become current on law and policy; learn new skills and strategies to work with families and children; and provide parents and professionals with tools and encouragement to explore possibilities for change. The conference will offer the most current research and practice information via dynamic, nationally known keynote speakers and experts in child welfare and related fields in 30 different workshop presentations.
This year we are offering 2 pre-conference special events to be held on Thursday afternoon 5/9/13 prior to the opening conference session on Friday morning. We are thrilled to announce the return of our popular Thursday LINK Family Gathering for foster and adoptive parent support groups and the first ever statewide meeting of the newly formed Adoption and Foster Care Therapist Network (AFCTN). In addition all conference attendees are welcome to attend the NYSCCC annual meeting at 7:00 pm on Thursday evening
We recommend you use our handy online registration form and make a safe, secure payment via PayPal for your registration fees. Or mail or fax a conference registration form (also included in the conference brochure below) to NYSCCC, 107 Prospect Park West #1R Brooklyn, NY, 11215. Fax# 888-482-9112. A Day of Beauty
It’s no secret that most tween to teen girls struggle with the concepts of beauty; whether it’s celebrities or schoolmates, young women are watching, comparing and developing their sense of beauty and what that means to their identity. For adoptive transracial families, this has an added layer. We invite girls ages 12-17 and their parents to our “Beauty Shop”; a workshop focused on helping girls and their parents talk about beauty and identity. We’ll celebrate the diversity of beauty, and enjoy hands-on demonstrations from the hair and skin professionals that will be joining us.

AFCAF/NY (Adoptive Families with Children of African Heritage and Their Friends, NY) in collaboration with FCCNY (Families with Children from China Greater New York) and the Adoption Initiative of St. John's University, New York, present:
Transracial Adoption Parenting Workshop 7
The Power of Normalcy: Destructive or Necessary?
Presenters: Kacy Ames & Billie Pivnick
Moderator: Kelly Sykes
May 14, 2013, 7pm
Saval Auditorium, St John's University, Manhattan Campus, 101 Murray Street, New York, NY 10007.
The venue can be reached easily by subway: 1,2,3,4 and 5, A and C, and N and R.
In adoptive families there is always a tension between being different, and the acknowledgement of that difference, and the characteristics of the world around, which often ask for adaptation. It is the tension between the adoptive mother and in a world of the biological mothers, the traumatized child and the 'normal' children around her or him, the black or Chinese or christian child and the caucasian or Jewish or American parents. In how far needs the adoptive family to normalize itself and in how far can she be different, and how are the roles for each of the family members: can the black child stay black or will it become a so called oreo, can a white mother authentically embrace Chinese culture, etc. These questions and many more will be addressed by Kacy Ames-Heron and Billie Pivnick in two short presentations. Kelly Sykes will moderate the Q & A afterwards.
Fee: 30 dollar.
Payment: Cash or check at the door. Or go to the website of Families with Children of China Greater New York: www.fccny.org. Click `click here' under Register for Events. If not an FCC member, click `Ignore' and you will land on the FCCNY Store page, select this event from the drop down window.

Even as awareness of autism grows along with the number of cases diagnosed, it remains a topic likely to raise more questions than answers. If you are a parent whose child is on the spectrum, or a school or health professional encountering increasing numbers of children with this mental health condition, you may have a host of concerns. Are there medications that can help? How much improvement in symptoms can be expected with good treatment? What are the best treatments? What can be done in the home and in general classroom settings to best support children? The Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center is pleased to announce a series of free workshops in which our expert clinicians and researchers will address these and other concerns. The Autism Spectrum Disorders Clinical and Research Program's 2012-13 Family Workshop Series is open to the public at no charge. The workshops will be held on the second Tuesday of every month, starting in October 2012 and running through May 2013. All workshops will be held at the Child Study Center's new offices at One Park Avenue at 33rd Street, 7th floor, from 6:00-7:30 pm, including a question and answer period at the end. Admission to the workshops is free, but registration is required. For more information or to register for a workshop, please contact: Sarah Kern at (646) 754-4879, Sarah.Kern@nyumc.org Meghan Morrissey at (646) 754-5062, Meghan.Morrissey@nyumc.org. Girls Connect has really worked in connecting the girls. When they go off to college they stay with one another when they go to tour. My daughter has used the advice of the older girls numerous times on subjects from what shampoo to use when your hair is greasy to what do to in certain situations. Plus the security and comfort of being with girls who are just like you. It's so beneficial for the younger girls to see the older girls so strong, smart nice and beautiful, that they too can accomplish whatever they want and endure any hardship. It's just such an amazing program and has helped and foster many connections on many levels.
Our NEW VENUE is 460 W. 34th Street, near 10th Ave

FACILITATOR: Cristina Cote
Some of you may remember Cristina Cote from her participation on the Life After High School panel that FCC sponsored in April, 2010. Cristina will focus on the nuts & bolts of what it was like as a student with a learning disability to take her SATs, search for appropriate colleges, attend college and graduate with honors. In a relaxed setting, Cristina will share her experiences and direct hands-on activities to help participants achieve the following: gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses; search for colleges with LD programs; determine their own learning styles; talk with professors and peers about their LDs, and build confidence by turning their learning differences into strengths.
Participants do not need to be on a college track although college discussions will be prevalent. Gap Year possibilities can be explored. The format of the group will be informal, with an emphasis on sharing with peers and having fun while processing the challenges they face. Understanding your needs and being able to communicate effectively with peers and adults are life skills that can be applied to any situation. High school students will learn to explore and discuss their options for transitioning from high school in a supportive, informal, social atmosphere.
Parents are welcome to contribute topics that they would like to see covered and participants are welcome to make suggestions on anything they would like to explore.
Space is limited. Please register asap.
Cristina Cote graduated from American University in 2009 with a major in Film and International Studies. Cristina was diagnosed with a reading and auditory processing learning disability in her junior year of high school while attending Poly Prep in Brooklyn. When applying to colleges, Cristina focused her search on schools that offered excellent LD accommodations and chose American University where she received priority registration for classes, used books on tape, customized her own major enabling her to focus on her academic strengths, and she had a counselor at the Academic Support Center. Cristina currently resides in New York and works in residential real estate at Corcoran, writes and produces a web-comedy show and runs a small tutoring business helping students prepare for interviews and to develop their interpersonal skills. Cristina is passionate about empowering others and in particular encouraging LD students to advocate for themselves and their needs no matter what their learning style. When Cristina learned the necessary coping strategies and embraced her LD it enabled her to maximize her strengths.

Peter Hessler: Strange Stones
A Conversation and Book Signing
21 May 2013 - 6:30pm
Strange StonesAsia Society
725 Park Avenue
New York, NY 10021
+212-288-6400
ChinaFile Presents: Peter Hessler, author of the recently published Strange Stones: Dispatches from East and West, a collection of essays and writing on China and the United States over the past decade. He will be in discussion with author Michael Meyer and Susan Jakes, Editor of ChinaFile.
Strange Stones is a far-ranging, thought-provoking collection of Hessler’s best reportage from The New Yorker over the past decade. During this time, Hessler lived in both Asia and the United States, writing as both native and knowledgeable outsider in these two very different regions. This unusual perspective distinguishes Strange Stones, which showcases Hessler’s unmatched range as a storyteller. “Wild Flavor” invites readers along on a taste test between two rat restaurants in South China. One story profiles Yao Ming, basketball star and China’s most beloved export, another David Spindler, an obsessive and passionate historian of the Great Wall. In “Dr. Don,” Hessler writes movingly about a small-town pharmacist and his relationship with the people he serves. While Hessler’s subjects and locations vary, subtle but deeply important thematic links bind these pieces — the strength of local traditions, the surprising overlap between apparently opposing cultures, the powerful lessons drawn from individuals who straddle different worlds.

U.S.-China Economic Relations in the Next Decade

New York, NY 10021

Over the past 30 years, strong economic connections have provided the foundation for a robust U.S.-China relationship. Commitments in Washington and Beijing to boost bilateral trade, finance, and investment have contributed to historic rates of growth in both countries, and have helped to create opportunities for cooperation on a range of important issues. As the relationship continues to deepen, however, an increasing number of frictions and misunderstandings threaten to hinder growth on both sides of the Pacific and complicate the future development of this critical economic partnership.
Please join us as we bring together experts from China and the United States to discuss potential areas for increased bilateral cooperation, the most beneficial ways forward for both countries, and projections of what can be achieved from a continued economic relationship in 2022 — the 50th anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s visit to China.
This discussion will draw upon the findings and recommendations offered in U.S.-China 2022: Economic Relations in the Next 10 Years, a groundbreaking study on the evolution of the U.S.-China economic relationship over the last three decades and an in-depth look at opportunities for future cooperation. The study is sponsored by the China-United States Exchange Foundation, which enjoys the guidance and support of a Steering Committee comprised of business executives, former government officials, and experts from both China and the United States.

Author Talk & Book Signing
Kosher Chinese: Living, Teaching, and Eating with China's Other Billion
In September of 2005, the Peace Corps sent Michael Levy to teach English in the heart of China's heartland. His hosts in the city of Guiyang found additional uses for him: resident expert on Judaism, romantic adviser, and provincial basketball star, to name a few. His account of overcoming vast cultural differences to befriend his students and fellow teachers is by turns poignant and laugh-out-loud funny.
While reveling in the peculiarities of life in China's interior, the author also discovered that the "other billion" (people living far from the coastal cities covered by the American media) have a complex relationship with both their own traditions and the rapid changes of modernization. Lagging behind in China's economic boom, they experience the darker side of "capitalism with Chinese characteristics," daily facing the schizophrenia of conflicting ideologies.
Michael Levy is an educator, writer, and traveler, currently teaching at the Avenues School in New York City. Along with teaching at Guizhou University, he has served on the faculty of St. Paul's School, Saint Ann's, and Putney Student Travel. While in the United States, Levy does his best to keep kosher. While in China, he eats anything with four legs but the table.
