Families with Children from China of Greater New York presents:
“Life After High School: Transitioning to College and Careers”
A Four-part Support Group for Adopted Teens with Learning Differences
DATES/TIME: Four Sunday Evenings: 5-7pm, snacks & pizza served.
March 18th, April 15, May 20, June 10
COST: $80 total ($20 per 2 hour session)
LOCATION: 255 West 101st Street, off Broadway, Upper West Side, Manhattan (We are lucky that Kacy's colleagues have agreed to continue renting the same space.)
REGISTER online at www.fccny.org
NEW FACILITATOR: Recent College Graduate, Cristina Cote, who was on the Life After High School Panel hosted by FCCNY Last April.
Some of you may remember Cristina Cote from her participation on the Life After High School panel that FCC sponsored last April, 2010. Since Kacy Ames-Heron, who has been leading the group since last September, is having a baby in March, and since we had received such positive feedback on the group, we made arrangements for Cristina to continue in Kacy's absence. Cristina will focus on the nuts & bolts of what it was like to take her SATs, search for appropriate colleges, attend college and graduate with honors. In a relaxed setting, Cristina will share her experiences and direct hands-on activities to help participants achieve the following: gain a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses; search for colleges with LD programs; determine their own learning styles; talk with professors and peers about their LDs, and build confidence by turning their learning differences into strengths. Participants do not necessarily have to be on a college track although college discussions will be prevalent. The format of the group will be informal, with an emphasis on sharing with peers and having fun while processing the challenges they face.
Parents are welcome to contribute topics that they would like to see covered and participants are welcome to make suggestions on anything in particular that they are interested in.
Space is limited. Please register asap.
Cristina Cote graduated from American University in 2009 with a major in Film and International Studies. Cristina was diagnosed with a reading and auditory processing learning disability in her junior year of high school while attending Poly Prep in Brooklyn. When applying to colleges, Cristina focused her search on schools that offered excellent LD accommodations and chose American University where she received priority registration for classes, used books on tape, customized her own major enabling her to focus on her academic strengths, and she had a counselor at the Academic Support Center. Cristina currently resides in New York and works in residential real estate at Corcoran, writes and produces a web-comedy show and runs a small tutoring business helping students prepare for interviews and to develop their interpersonal skills. Cristina is passionate about empowering others and in particular encouraging LD students to advocate for themselves and their needs no matter what their learning style. When Cristina learned the necessary coping strategies and embraced her LD it enabled her to maximize her strengths.

Private Danny Chen's case has great relevance to what happened to Vincent Chin 30 years ago. We hope you can make this important event.
Vincent Chin 30: Standing Up Then & Now (NYC)
Date/Time: Saturday, June 23, 2012 @ 2 PM ET (doors open at 1:30 PM)
Location: Asian/Asian American Research Institute / 25 W 43rd St., 18th Floor, New York, NY 10036
Please join us for a two-part commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Vincent Chin’s murder, a foundational moment in Asian American/Pacific Islander history that remains relevant today.
During the first hour, we will join 30+ cities in viewing (via Google Hangout) a nationwide panel on hate crimes and bullying, featuring civil rights leaders from around the country, including Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), CAIR-SF Executive Director Zahra Billoo, OCA Executive Director Tom Hayashi, Asian American Justice Center Executive Director Mee Moua, and live from our location, The Sikh Coalition’s National Director of Programs, Amardeep Singh. Guest-moderated by Phil Yu of Angry Asian Man.
Following the panel, we will continue with our local event by engaging in discussion and interactive art-making to document the lasting impact of Vincent Chin’s case on the AAPI community. With the help of talented AAPI artists, we will use various artistic media—painting, writing, and film—to create our own unique response to this day and produce lasting cultural artifacts that will continue to breathe life into our activism.
