Roughly 80,000 Chinese girls have been adopted in the United States from China since 1989, a decade after China implemented its One Child Policy. One such adoptive parent is filmmaker Linda Goldstein Knowlton, who has crafted a deeply moving film about the many issues facing transcultural adoptions. The film intimately follows four teenagers: Haley, Jenna, Ann and Fang. These wise-beyond-their-years, yet typical American teens reveal a heartbreaking sense of self-awareness as they attempt to answer the uniquely human question, “Who am I?” Knowlton followed these young women for almost three years. We find them in their hometowns where some are as “all-American” as can be, yet each one has another life story to discover. As they meet and bond with other adoptees, some journey back to China to reconnect with the culture, and some reach out to the orphaned girls left behind. In their own ways, all attempt to make sense of their complex identities. Issues of belonging, race and gender are brought to life through these articulate subjects, who approach life with honesty and open hearts.
Additional support provided by Fandor.
A note to parents: Due to the sensitive subject matter,
this film is not recommended for ages 13 and under.

Adoption meet up/play group this SUNDAY 8/5 in Bro
|
8/5/2012
|
|
We will be holding our monthly adoption meet up/play group this Sunday, August 5th at 4pm at the LICH playground (Henry Street just south of Atlantic Avenue, the younger kid playground---the second one in from Atlantic Avenue). If it rains, we will be at the Moxie Spot.
This is a group open to anyone thinking about adoption, who have adopted, who want to talk with people who have gone through the process, who want their adopted kids to have friends who are also adopted, whatever. New faces always welcome! We have families with domestically adopted kids and internationally adopted kids whose ages range from newborn to 5 years. We would love to have an even wider range of ages.
Last month's meet up was so much fun, and we appreciate everyone's commitment to making this a great experience month after month. See you Sunday!
If you have never come to a meet up before, please let me know via email ( smasaniello@yahoo.com ) if you plan to be there so I can look for you.
Best,
Sharon (Masan, 3 and Evie, 1)

Dubbed a "Don't Miss" by San Francisco Chronicle, the theatrical work is a semiautobiographical, semi fictional take on Lisa Marie Rollins' life. Adopted as a baby into a White family and raised in an all White community, Rollins show takes on a comedic and at times, heartbreaking examination the new generation of African American, African (Ethiopia), Caribbean (Haiti) adoptees.
"We hear story after story about parents who are going on their adoption journeys or see images of celebrities who have adopted across race and adopted internationally, and everything is happy. What we don't hear are the multilayered voices of these adoptees once they have become adults looking back on their experiences, or about how the impact of adoption is lifelong. We don't hear about how the deep love and crazy family dynamics get complicated by race." says Lisa Marie.

FCC Member Questions? Please contact Mary Brown mtbrown@nyc.rr.com, 718 520-1636
I went to the TARGET Passport Fridays: Taiwan last year. Had a great time. Movie last year was kid-friendly but you needed to read English subtitles. Note: it is planned as an outdoor event. Break your blanket & snacks (or low beach chair). Last year, it was moved inside due to rain. There is limited seating inside – given on a first-come basis. If the weather doesn’t look great on Friday – I recommend you get there as early as possible. I won’t be able to hold seats. If the weather is nice – let’s try to sit together as close to the center of the film screen as possible.
Dance: Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company‘s director was an early member of the Cloud Gate Dance Theater in Taiwan. She graduated from the Chinese Cultural University in 1982 and came to America to seek her own voice in the world of contemporary dance. Since the inception of her Company in 1988, Ms. Chen has created a wide-ranging repertory, from dances that originated thousands of years ago to highly abstract, modern works. The inspiration for her dances often comes from the poetic motion of the Chinese painting brush, from folk rituals and ceremonies, and from the phenomena of nature. Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and Youth Dancers will present four distinctive works at QMA.
Music: Taiwanese Music Ensemble Of New York was founded in 2010 by Ms Shih-hua Yeh, who is specialize in multiple Chinese instruments and graduated from the Taipei National University of Arts. The Ensemble has grown to become a formal traditional bamboo and silk music ensemble, including: pipa, erhu, youngqin, dizi, and guzheng. Ms. Yeh performs guqin (the oldest Chinese traditional instrument) and Nanguan music (Southern-pipe music which originally came from Fujian province) which both listed as Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
Film: Fishing Luck (Wen-Chen Tseng,Taiwan, 2005, Mandarin with English ST) follows a Taipei girl Jing who goes on a business trip to the fishing town of Lanyu Island, famous for the abundance of flying fish. There she loses her purse as well as her boyfriend, who has double-crossed her back in Taipei. In desperation, she stays in the house of an aboriginal boy Feng and feelings begin to grow between them.

From Coffeehouses to Banquet Halls
Sat, Aug 25 from 1pm – 2:30pm
Restaurants have played a major role in Chinatown history since the early settlements. The earliest Chinese eateries in New York catered strictly to the needs of Chinatown’s turn-of-the-century “bachelor society.” Over time, however, Chinatown’s restaurant industry would reflect the neighborhood’s changing immigrant population and needs. Through present-day and historical food-related sites, this themed walking tour will trace the evolution of Chinese American eateries and food ways in Chinatown, and highlight the ways in which these eateries have both reflected and shaped this community.
Fee (does not include gallery admission):
$15/adult; $12/student & senior; $8/MOCA member; Free for children under 5

A Play by Bennett Windheim, AFCAF/NY Member
Directed by Bernard Cummings
At a time when many Americans feel powerless to affect positive change, Peter and Sarah Ehrlich - a successful, media-centric white couple - decide to test their altruism by doing what they believe to be the right thing: adopting a black child. But through the issues that arise through the process, they discover and must confront the content of their own character.
