Reflecting on Adoption and Asian American Heritage 

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the NYC events committee is hosting an event on Tuesday, May 25th at 7pm ET to reflect, discuss, and learn about Asian American history. We are excited to offer this as a time to celebrate AAPI history, which has often been overlooked, and contextualize our own experience as adoptees within this history. We encourage attendees to watch “Breaking Through,” the fifth episode in the PBS series Asian Americans (currently available for free: https://www.pbs.org/video/part-3-breaking-through-yi6lyb/.) We will also be watching clips from the documentary during the event, so don’t worry if you are not able to watch the episode beforehand. We can’t wait to see you!

Discussion Questions

• How did watching the series feel? What thoughts did it provoke? 
• Do you identify with other first generation Asian immigrants, today and in the past?
• To what extent do you resonate with stories of second generation Asian American immigrants? 
• When learning about the history of Asian American immigrants pursuing the “American Dream” and their struggles for racial justice, how connected do you feel to the Asian American community as a whole?
• This series was produced by a number of prominent Asian American filmmakers, and features many Asian Americans who are outspoken about Asian American heritage (stand up comedian, actors/actresses, etc.). How do adoptees see themselves taking charge of our own narratives and telling our stories going forward?

This event is open to Asian American Adoptees, must be 18+.
